Itasca, Ill.-based Gift of Hope Organ & Tissue Donor Network and organ donation will be part of the story line for the Dec. 8 episode of Chicago Med, which airs at 9 p.m. (EST) Tuesdays on NBC affiliates. Chicago Med, which premiered on Nov. 17, is the newest installment of NBC’s compelling “Chicago” franchise. Producers call it “an emotional thrill ride through the day-to-day chaos of the city’s newest state-of-the-art trauma center and into the lives of the courageous doctors, nurses and staff who hold it all together.”
The Dec. 8 episode of the show will include a story about a mass casualty event that ultimately leads to organ donation. Five Gift of Hope staff members and a pair of Gift of Hope vans were involved in the taping of the episode. Three staff members make brief appearances on the show as extras.
This may be the first time a medical show on TV has included and mentioned an organ procurement organization in a story line involving organ donation. This is important because one of the prevailing myths about donation is that doctors and other caregivers won’t fight hard to save someone in an ER because they want the organs for donation.
