Organ Donor Enrollment Day

Organ Donor Enrollment Day

LiveOnNY is launching the first-ever Organ Donor Enrollment Day on Tuesday, October 6th in an effort to enroll as many supportive New Yorkers as possible as organ donors in a single day. Individuals and teams from hospitals, businesses, community groups, and colleges, along with government officials throughout the greater New York area, will band together to raise awareness and bring hope to the more than 10,000 New Yorkers waiting for a life-saving transplant.

“The issue in New York isn’t that residents don’t support organ donation. In fact, a 2015 survey shows that over 90% of New Yorkers support it,” said Helen Irving, President and CEO of LiveOnNY. “With Organ Donor Enrollment Day, we’re making signing-up as an organ donor easier and more visible than any other day of the year. We hope that this will inspire what is a very supportive New York community to take the important step to sign-up as life-saving organ donors.”

While Organ Donor Enrollment Day is about highlighting the importance of signing up as a donor, making it easier than ever to do so, and inspiring New Yorkers to take action, there is also a competitive element. On October 6th, more than 80 teams will hit the streets across the five boroughs, Long Island, Westchester and Putnam, Rockland, Dutchess and Orange Counties and compete against each other to drive the most enrollments. The team doing so will receive bragging rights and public recognition.

Additionally, the day is being promoted by LiveOnNY media partners Z100, Lite FM and WFAN, and a number of hospitals will host kick-off events and/or press conferences that will include local elected officials, senior hospital personnel, LiveOnNY representatives, living donors, transplant recipients and donor families. LiveOnNY is utilizing messaging that challenges New Yorkers to make a choice; have an ordinary Tuesday, or sign-up as an organ donor, and make it an extraordinary life-saving Tuesday.

We’re 50th out of 50 states with regard to the percentage of state residents registered as organ donors. That is not the New York we know. We are hopeful that Organ Donor Enrollment Day, along with other efforts, brings out the true caring spirt of New York.

Organ Donor Enrollment Day has captured the interest and involvement of elected officials. In fact, the town of Huntington in Suffolk County has formerly proclaimed October 6th as Organ Donor Enrollment Day. Other local governments are expected to follow suit.
